It has been a while since anything was heard about Askiisoft’s samurai platformer Katana Zero, but the developer has now reconfirmed once more that, yes, the DLC is still on its way—and it is big. So big, in fact, that Askiisoft is essentially calling it a sequel.
In a Bluesky post on October 22, Justin Stander of Askiisoft announced that the Katana Zero DLC has grown even larger than when it was last mentioned—in March 2021. It is now reportedly “the size of a full sequel” and comes with a soundtrack of more than 30 new songs. There is no release date or any other detail beyond this confirmation, but at least it is still coming.
This is wonderful news for any fan of the 2019 side-scrolling samurai platformer, though a release date would be welcome. It is starting to feel like Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight: Silksong, given how often Askiisoft confirms the DLC is coming without saying exactly when. After all, the last time anything was heard about the project was in April 2025, when Askiisoft said it was “still coming” and “still free.” This is no criticism, of course. The writer would simply like to play the DLC already.

Katana Zero launched in April 2019. A neo-noir action-platformer, it casts players as Subject Zero, a sword-wielding amnesiac assassin, as they converse with a psychiatrist between deflecting bullets and slashing through enemies. It is an interesting blend of political intrigue, side-scrolling hack-and-slash gameplay, time-bending mechanics, and nightmare sequences, telling a compelling story about identity and suppression. GameSpot gave it an 8/10 in its Katana Zero review, calling it “bloody and brutal [with] a heartfelt tale that you shouldn’t overlook lightly.”
The DLC was announced one week after the game’s release, so it has been in development for seven years now. Askiisoft said in its October 22 Bluesky post that “more updates” will follow, so hopefully everyone gets to take their clown masks off sometime in the near future.
