While touring the Brazil Game Show, we were welcomed into the Resident Evil Survival Unit booth, where the title made its exclusive debut in São Paulo, giving fans an early glimpse of the upcoming mobile entry.
Resident Evil Survival Unit is a joint effort between three studios: Korean developer JoyCity, Japanese publisher Aniplex, and Capcom itself. The collaboration promises a fresh take on the long‑running franchise.
Designed as a strategy game, the title actually blends several genres into a single, cohesive experience.
“Regarding the core content, we’ll keep the classic single‑player mode that fans love from Resident Evil,” says Jay Park, Head of Strategic Division at JoyCity. “In addition, we’re adding mobile‑friendly modes such as a defense mode and arena PvP. Players will also be able to engage in real‑time multiplayer with people around the world.”
The core gameplay will unfold in a seamless loop: you begin solo, gathering characters and gear, then upgrade them with the resources you collect. Once your roster is bolstered, you can join friends and the broader community, creating a cycle where you continuously acquire new characters, enhance equipment, and expand your team.
Survival Unit’s narrative also draws from the developers’ experience, opting for a more enticing mobile-friendly twist: the game unfolds along a parallel timeline, allowing familiar Resident Evil characters—some of whom may have met their demise in other iterations—to reappear in fresh, unlikely scenarios.
After a concise introduction that outlined the Survival Unit concept, we had the chance to ask Jay Park a few questions.
How did the idea for the game originate? Did you pitch the project to Capcom, or did Capcom commission it?
At the outset, JoyCity was scouting for a fresh venture that could immerse players in a zombie apocalypse setting. While the studio had a solid track record in crafting simulation titles, this time they aimed to pivot toward a game centered on the undead.
Concurrently, Capcom was eager to broaden the reach of the Resident Evil franchise beyond traditional consoles, eyeing the mobile market as a promising frontier. It was then that Shinji Hashimoto of Aniplex—renowned executive producer with a legacy that includes Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts—saw a perfect synergy between the two studios and facilitated a partnership that would bring this ambitious project to life.
In an effort to offset the slightly more restrictive controls, the developers have woven classic mobile‑game elements into the experience, including a dynamic arena mode and a robust defense mode.
About 70 people contributed to the creation of the title, and the entire development cycle spanned roughly two years.
While the interview highlighted the nostalgic appeal for long‑time fans, the team also noted that some members had never played the series before. Their approach to attracting both veteran players and a newer, younger audience involves blending familiar franchise elements with fresh, accessible gameplay twists.
