Sony has announced a new Midnight Black variant of its disc-less PlayStation 5, but the console is confirmed only for Japan. As revealed on the Japanese PlayStation Blog, the Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition launches on 19 November — the same day as GTA 6 — for ¥55,000 (~$380 / £263).
The low price reflects the console’s restrictions. The new model is based on the region-locked PS5 Sony launched in Japan last November. Its language cannot be changed from Japanese and it only works with PSN accounts registered in Japan, preventing export outside the country.

Sony is also releasing a matching Midnight Black blu-ray disc drive for players who want to keep access to physical media — for however long that’s going to be worth it. The new model may ease pressure on Sony amid shortages of its standard PS5, a console so in-demand in Japan that the company has had to implement a lottery system to distribute supplies.
While the rest of the world does not have access to the Midnight Black PS5, buyers can replicate the look with the Midnight Black Console Covers, which cost $54 / £45. The covers are easily removed and replaced; since the middle of the PS5 is already black, installing them achieves a similar effect. A Midnight Black DualSense controller is also available for sale worldwide.
The only missing piece is the blu-ray disc drive, which remains available in standard white only. It’s possible Sony will bring the Midnight Black version to the rest of the world after its Japanese launch.
