Is HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ Getting a Second Season? Everything We Know So Far

HBO’s acclaimed superhero series Lanterns has concluded its first season with an emotionally resonant finale that resolved the mysteries of Rushville, Nebraska, and Hal Jordan’s murder, yet the network has not officially confirmed whether the show will return for a second season. Despite strong critical praise and robust viewership numbers, uncertainty surrounding Warner Bros. Discovery’s pending merger with Paramount Skydance has left the series’ future in limbo, even as writers continue to develop ideas for what could come next.

The season finale brought together Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), Earth’s first Green Lantern, and his replacement John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) into a satisfying conclusion. With those central mysteries now neatly resolved, questions remain about whether the series needs to continue beyond its clear setup for Stewart’s eventual appearance in Man of Tomorrow. For fans hoping to see John become a full-fledged superhero on his own terms, here is everything currently known about a potential second season.

The Renewal Question

HBO has not officially greenlit a second season of Lanterns despite the fact that it has been both a critical and commercial success. The series racked up 6.6 million U.S. viewers in its first three days on HBO, nearly matching the 6.7 million viewers who watched A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms within the first three days of its launch in January. That Game of Thrones spinoff was renewed well ahead of its series premiere.

Lanterns’ audience only grew as the season progressed, averaging 12 million U.S. viewers per episode by the end of its run. Yet despite those strong numbers, no renewal has been announced. The delay is likely tied to uncertainty over the future of DC Studios in connection with the pending merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance.

James Gunn and Peter Safran have said they will continue to lead DC Studios after the merger, but several planned TV series were scrapped in August after Supergirl bombed at the box office. This broader industry turbulence has made HBO cautious about committing to new productions so far out on the horizon.

The Writers Are Already Working

Despite the lack of an official renewal, there are signs that creative development is underway. Series co-creator Damon Lindelof recently told Collider that some of the show’s writers are working on ideas for season 2. However, Lindelof will not be part of that work, which will be led by co-creators Chris Mundy and Tom King.

“We want the audience to be really hungry for more when it ends. I think that it feels like it was a really good meal, but a couple of hours after you’ve consumed it, you’re going to say, ‘I think I want to spend some more time in that world.'”

Damon Lindelof, co-creator of Lanterns

Lindelof previously said he always imagined Lanterns could run for multiple seasons. His comments suggest the creative team has ambitions beyond a single season, even if official confirmation remains elusive.

Potential Plot Directions

If Lanterns does return, Tom King hinted at what he’d like to explore next in a separate press conference ahead of the season finale. He explained that John’s custom version of the Green Lantern oath was inspired by Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern run, where the former Green Lantern Sinestro created his own Yellow Lantern Corps whose members channeled the power of fear.

In Lanterns, Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) explains that “fear can be the most powerful force in the universe.” John abandoned Sinestro on a planet where the very air and water are contaminated by fear, giving him plenty of time to learn about that power. He has already shown he is capable of forging a lantern on his own, and if he can figure out how to make his own ring, he would once again become a serious threat to the Guardians of the Universe and the new Green Lantern of Earth.

When Could Season 2 Arrive?

Even if Lanterns does get a second season, it will be a while before it returns to HBO. Peacemaker, HBO’s first live-action DC series, premiered in January 2022 and was renewed for a second season a month later, but that season did not premiere until August 2025.

Assuming Lanterns follows a similar production pattern, fans probably wouldn’t see more episodes until around 2029. That timeline reflects the extended development cycles now common across DC Studios productions as they rebuild their slate after recent cancellations.

John Stewart’s Path to the Big Screen

In the film, they’ll be battling Brainiac alongside a host of other superheroes, including Superman, Supergirl, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl. Man of Tomorrow premieres on July 9, 2027, giving Stewart fans a clear path to see their hero become a full-fledged superhero in his own right long before any potential Lanterns season 2 could arrive.
