Apple’s first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, will cost up to $999 to repair if owners lack AppleCare+, according to a report by 9to5Mac. The repair figures emerged ahead of the device’s release next week.
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999. Repair costs range from $199 for damage to the glass back, up to $999 for inner screen damage, and as much as $1,499 for “other damage,” though it was not clear what that category covers.

AppleCare+ would significantly reduce all of these prices. The article suggested that buyers of such an expensive device should seriously consider bundling the protection plan, along with purchasing a case.

The high repair costs come as Apple largely sidesteps the fragility issues that plagued early foldables. When Samsung’s first foldable phones launched, their displays were prone to damage, with gaps when folded allowing sand particles inside. Owners could even peel the outer layer of the display off, a problem severe enough that Samsung issued a statement clarifying the outer layer was not a screen protector.
The iPhone Duo likely won’t be as fragile as those earlier foldables, but it still contains many moving parts prone to unforeseen damage. Its durability will only become clear once devices reach users later this month. The phone’s unique display aspect ratio may also make it one of the first foldables suited for gaming.
