IO Interactive Pushes 007 First Light Switch 2 Edition to March 2027, Cites “No Choice

September 24, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

IO Interactive has delayed the Switch 2 edition of its upcoming James Bond stealth-action title 007 First Light for a second time, pushing the version’s release from its original May 2026 window all the way to March 2027. The studio’s technical producer, Cristina Vega, explained to Inven Global that the postponement was unavoidable, describing it as “disappointing news for fans” but ultimately a decision “also made for their benefit.” The announcement arrives amid a period of internal strain for the developer, which has faced layoffs following Xbox’s withdrawal of funding and is now focused on delivering the Switch 2 build in its most polished possible form.

The delay follows a chain of shifting release dates that has left the community waiting longer than initially anticipated. First Light was originally slated to launch alongside the game’s other platform versions in May 2026, before IO moved the title to Summer 2026, and is now being pushed yet another year out. Vega told Inven Global that the studio had been “grinding hard for a while” and “needed a brief breather” before finalizing the Switch 2 build. She also pointed to “requests from marketing and various other factors” that compounded the situation, leaving the team with “no choice” but to extend the release into 2027.

A Commitment to a Polished Experience

According to Vega, the core motivation behind the extended timeline is quality rather than delay for its own sake. “Ultimately, we decided on another delay because we want fans to experience the game in its most polished form on Switch 2, so we ask for your understanding,” she said. The studio has been careful to reassure players that the fundamental experience of the game will remain intact, even as certain technical compromises become necessary on the hardware.

One notable adjustment concerns the Switch 2’s mouse functionality. Vega confirmed that First Light for Switch 2 does not utilize the console’s mouse, noting that the team was unable to find a way to leverage the feature and did not believe it “makes particular sense from a gameplay perspective.” Beyond input, the console’s relative performance gap compared to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S means that “some compromises are inevitable” from a technical standpoint.

Vega acknowledged that object detail would not be as impressive on the Switch 2, citing environmental elements such as trees as examples where fidelity might be slightly reduced. However, she emphasized that “core elements the player looks at, and the central aspects of gameplay, must remain identical.” In terms of world population, the Switch 2 edition will feature fewer NPCs, though the number of enemies players must fight remains unchanged. “We haven’t changed the gameplay itself, so players don’t need to worry about the game feeling empty due to reduced NPCs,” Vega explained.

Looking Ahead

The delay for the Switch 2 edition comes at a challenging moment for IO Interactive as a whole. In addition to finalizing First Light for Switch 2, the studio is reportedly working on a new fantasy game, though the project’s scope and timeline remain unconfirmed. The company’s workforce has been significantly reduced after Xbox pulled funding, leading to a wave of layoffs that has weighed on the studio’s capacity and morale.

Amid these developments, a large portion of the fanbase has expressed interest in seeing IO Interactive return to the 007 franchise with a sequel to First Light. To date, however, no official announcements regarding a follow-up title have been made. As the March 2027 release date for the Switch 2 edition solidifies, players will be watching closely to see how the studio balances its competing priorities and whether further updates emerge before the game’s eventual launch.
