There are far too many promising indie games releasing every week to keep up, but this one, Queen’s Domain, has really caught my eye. It releases onto PS5 today for £17.75 / $19.99, and it’s inspired by King’s Field, the series FromSoftware made before Demon’s Souls.
Essentially, it’s an RPG blending retro visuals and the fantasy RPG genre to create a difficult adventure based around combat and exploration. You travel to an island called the Isle of Naesied, where your father disappeared. From there, an adventure ensues.
Combat sounds like it’ll be a challenge, as there are no block or parry mechanics and attacking just once uses up your entire stamina bar. With no autosaves (there are only manual saves), it sounds like you need to be very careful as you explore the island. You start the game with a simple wooden spear, but eventually, you find a Holy Sword that lets you dash about the place, which unlocks new areas to explore.
Here’s the feature set developer Freshly Bakes Giochi is pitching:
- Esplora an interconnected island filled with hidden secrets
- Lovingly crafted retro-fantasy aesthetic
- Action-combat with a stamina meter, special attacks, throwing weapons & more
- Fly across gaps with your Holy Sword – use upgrades to fly further!
- 50+ melee weapons to discover, equip, and upgrade
- Use XP to level up and eat delicious food to further increase your stats
- 20+ types of secondary throwing weapons allow for varied strategies in combat
- Over 100 enemies, mini bosses, and bosses to defeat
- Dozens of hours of adventuring and exploration
