Whether Captain Price survives the ending of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 remains unresolved. IGN put the question to Infinity Ward, and narrative director Jeff Negus answered—but not with a yes or no.

In a mid-credits scene, Mads Mikkelsen’s The Archer is seen transporting a captive Captain Price away in a truck. An ambush lets Price break free as the vehicle crashes; he then wrestles with a metal pipe protruding from his stomach while The Archer retreats into the snow. Price turns the tables and uses the pipe to puncture the rogue Russian minister of defense’s throat, killing him on a frozen lake. Ghost arrives as Price lies motionless beside his fallen foe.
I’ll say this. We went out of our way in this game to pace character deaths, both in where they happen and in the expression of the moment happening. And I would say that scene is consistent with others.

The answer leaves Price’s fate open. Across Modern Warfare 4’s 16 missions, several characters from earlier entries die—including Makarov, Gabriela, Graves and Gaz. Some meet conclusive ends: Gaz, Graves and Gabriela are all shot in the head, while Makarov is dispatched early with his head destroyed on a snowy New York street.
