In a stunning upset that’s sending ripples through the gaming world, an indie fishing game called “How to Fish” is currently outperforming the early-access beta for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Steam. While everyone knows Call of Duty, this little gem has somehow managed to capture the hearts (and wallets) of a massive audience.

The Unlikely Champion

According to Steam“>Steam data, “How to Fish” boasts over 341,000 concurrent players today. The developer, Dazed Games, has also announced that the co-op title has already surpassed 1 million copies sold since its release on August 20th. And for just under $5 (with a regular price of $8), it’s an absolute steal!

This is in stark contrast to the early-access beta for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which peaked at just over 115,000 concurrent players on Friday and has been steadily declining since. Remember, this beta was only available to those who preordered Modern Warfare on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. An open beta is scheduled for August 28th to September 1st.

So, what’s the secret sauce? Well, “How to Fish” isn’t your typical serene fishing simulator. It’s a physics-based game where you reel in cod and sharks, then proceed to brutally dispatch them using any means necessary. We’re talking punching, stabbing, and even no-scoping them for extra cash! It’s definitely on the silly side of the spectrum compared to more realistic simulations.

The “Friendslop” Phenomenon

Interestingly, “How to Fish” has the backing of Evil Landfall, the publishing arm of Peak developer Landfall. This is significant because their co-op climbing game, simply titled “Peak,” was one of last year’s biggest surprise hits on Steam. Both titles fall under a relatively new genre playfully dubbed “friendslop,” emphasizing chaotic fun and shared experiences.
