Inde Navarrette is pouring herself into her upcoming role as Rogue in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s long-awaited X-Men reboot, telling the LA Times that she is “doing everything humanly possible” to honor a character with more than three decades of comic book history. The actress, who was announced earlier this year as one of the leads for director Jake Schrieier’s film, said she feels both the weight and privilege of stepping into the shoes of the Mississippi-born mutant ahead of the movie’s 2028 premiere.
The MCU X-Men reboot arrives with enormous expectations hanging over it. Previous films in the mutant-centered corner of Marvel’s cinematic universe spent years building iconic figures like Cyclops and Rogue, establishing fan favorites now poised to be reimagined for a new generation. Navarrette is among a small cast set to reshape these beloved characters, and she insists she is not approaching the assignment casually.
A Devoted Approach to an Iconic Role
In her conversation with the LA Times, Navarlette made clear that she views the role as far more than another credit on a résumé. She described studying the character extensively and weighing what both the filmmakers and longtime fans expect from Rogue.
“I’m doing everything humanly possible because I love that character,” Navarrette said. “I’ve studied that character. I want to do it justice for myself, for [director Jake Schrieier], for what they want to portray and also for what I as a fan want her to be like. I’m doing everything, exclamation point.”

The actress has spent years building her craft on television, with roles in series such as 13 Reasons Why and Superman & Lois. Her performance in the low-budget horror hit Obsession elevated her profile considerably, riding a wave of Oscar buzz and attention that even brought turned-down parts her way. Despite that momentum, she chose to commit to Schrieier’s X-Men as one of her first major projects following the film’s success.
The Burden and Blessing of Rogue’s Legacy
Rogue carries a rich legacy that any actor would be wise to respect. Beyond her extensive comic book history, the character has already appeared across numerous animated and live-action productions, most notably portrayed by Anna Paquin in 2000’s X-Men and its sequel X2: X-Men United. For Navarrette, inheriting such a well-established figure means meeting both nostalgic expectations and fresh creative ambitions.
She has also teased the lengths she is going to capture one of Rogue’s most distinctive traits: her unforgettable southern accent. As she prepares for what could be the biggest role of her career, she is not doing it alone. Lenore Zann, who voiced Rogue across multiple animated X-Men projects over the years, recently offered her public support to the Marvel newcomer.
The Expanding Cast Arrives in 2028
Navarrette will take on the role of Rogue when the MCU X-Men movie premieres on May 5, 2028. The film is set to introduce a wide ensemble of new actors bringing familiar characters to life for the first time within Marvel’s shared universe. The full cast announced as of D23 2026 includes Navarrette as Rogue, Adam Driver as Mister Sinister, Maya Boyd as Storm, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, and Asa Germann as Angel.
While details about the plot remain tightly under wraps, Schrieier has teased some of the comic book stories that will inspire the film’s narrative. The announcement also prompted discussion among fans, including questions about whether Wolverine should have been included in the reboot’s lineup.
Looking Ahead
The X-Men reboot does not exist in isolation from Marvel’s broader plans. Some of the franchise’s previous mutants are set to return to the big screen when Avengers: Doomsday marks a turning point for another MCU saga this December, with Avengers: Secret Wars arriving the following year. With those films still reshaping the cinematic landscape, fans have no way of knowing which other heroes might appear in the near future as Marvel continues its ambitious multi-year strategy.
