A lot of people are wondering how to play DMZ solo in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, or even whether it’s actually possible in the first place. I bring good news: it is definitely possible, but the setting is a little hidden, and chances are, you’ll load into your first game without even seeing the option not to party up with other random solo players.

When you’re getting ready to deploy from your forward-operating base, select your deployment choice (story mission, dynamic operation, or free roam), then choose your infil method. Then you’ll be shown a screen with your operator, your inventory, whether you want to equip a free loadout or not, and more.

In the very bottom left of this screen, there’s a small toggle that says “squad fill.” If you want to play solo, make sure this is turned off. Doing so will ensure you load into DMZ by yourself, rather than having random teammates with you.

If you’re traditionally a solo player, this is obviously great news, but playing solo has a few different benefits in DMZ. Firstly, you get to keep all the loot you find to yourself. It also means it’s easier to stay stealthy and avoid enemies, whether they’re real players or PvE soldiers. Finally, it also means you can do whichever story missions and dynamic operations you like, rather than having to go for what someone else wants.

Of course, playing in a squad is also helpful in DMZ, because there are some incredibly tough missions and bosses to fight. For these, squad fill can be handy, but if you have strong enough gear, and you’re skilled enough at the game, it’s also possible to complete these solo.
