Completing these tasks requires using each spell in various situations, which is why killing enemies with a whip attack becomes necessary for certain upgrades.
According to a guide published by Gamer24h’s Polygon, players who have just defeated the game’s first boss can learn how to perform a whip attack to upgrade the Holy Cross arcana.
The whip is received after defeating the Fallen, the game’s first boss, and although it functions as a tool rather than a weapon, it can be used to perform whip attacks. Players must press the command to throw it and, before it connects with an enemy, press the attack button.
A “whip attack” is a buffed attack that Rose performs with her currently equipped weapon by propelling herself toward the enemy when commands are timed correctly. If players take longer than required to issue the second command, Rose will instead perform a normal move followed by a jump backwards.
The time frame for landing a whip attack is short, so both commands must be pressed as quickly as possible. Whenever a whip attack lands successfully, a yellow aura covers Rose’s model and she performs a different attack animation.
While whip attacks can target any enemy, they are easier to land on skeleton archers found on the Paris Streets map, since these enemies mostly stand in one place, allowing players to measure the exact distance for the whip to connect. Floating spirits in the Holy Innocents’ Cemetery serve as another good option.
Practicing this move is important for completing the Holy Cross’ Work of Mercy, which requires killing 10 enemies with a whip attack. However, since the whip itself is not classified as a weapon but rather a tool that can buff attacks with all weapons, players will mostly use it to swing from anchors or pull themselves toward enemies.
Additionally, this whip does not count toward other tasks required to upgrade the Holy Cross, such as the task requiring players to acquire three different whip-type weapons.
