Medusa, also known as the Prophetess, is one of the first three bosses players face in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. Defeating her grants access to the keys needed to open the gate leading to the catacombs.

The game does not indicate where these enemies appear, requiring players to explore every room in the opening maps for clues that lead to the boss rooms. Below is a guide on how to beat Medusa and where to find her.

Where to find the Prophetess

The Prophetess can be found in the Holy Innocents’ Cemetery region, located left of Paris Streets. Early in the game, the best way to reach the cemetery is to head left from the Street of the Tomb Masons area in Paris Streets.

In the Holy Innocents’ Cemetery region, continue going left until you reach the Fountain of the Lost. Drop into the water to descend into the Serpent’s Lair area below. The Prophetess’s boss arena is the last room on the left, past the Mirror of Life on the right side.

How to beat Medusa

The key to defeating Medusa is memorizing her attack rotation and becoming familiar with moving between platforms in the arena. Beating her rewards players with the Prophetess’ Key as well as the Petrifying Gaze arcana.

Her moveset consists of three basic attacks:

Slam attack: Medusa slams her arm onto the platform in front of her, then follows up with a slash. She always raises one of her arms for a few seconds before launching this move. Players have enough time to strike her a couple of times while she charges, but will eventually need to jump off the platform. Practice dropping off to avoid the attack, then returning using the whip on the purple anchor.

Petrifying attack: Medusa can release a petrifying beam, identifiable as she charges and small glowing particles fly toward her. To avoid it, turn Rose’s back to Medusa.

Tail attack: Throughout the fight, Medusa will use her tail against players who stay on the lower platforms.

First, memorize these three attacks and how to counter them. Once you can dodge them without trouble, aim to stay on the upper platform closest to Medusa and look for openings to attack.

Medusa repeats this ultimate move several times during the fight. While she keeps the same pattern, small rocks begin falling from the ceiling after the second time and can damage players. Avoid them but prioritize hiding behind the large rock.
