Hideo Kojima has posted a review of Alejandro Iñárritu’s satirical black comedy Digger, one of the most divisive mainstream films of the year. The game director, who says his body is 70% made of movies, previously published his take on Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil film.
Kojima described Digger, which stars Tom Cruise, as “a film that all of us living in today’s world should see.” He added: “It is a work that remains with the audience, provoking reflection and sounding alarms.”
The director avoided detailed specifics in his review, likely to avoid spoiling the plot. Instead, he said the film’s message would linger for years. “As you absorb this film and carry it with you, a ‘tool (a digger)’ for delving deeper into the future will surely begin to take shape within you,” he said.

Kojima and Iñárritu sat down with Gizmodo to discuss Digger and other topics. The conversation is available in Japanese.
Digger reviews have been mixed, and the film underperformed at the box office, earning just $37 million globally so far. Warner Bros., the studio behind it, leaned into the divisiveness by altering its marketing campaign after reviews emerged to encourage audiences to see the film and decide for themselves.
Kojima remains busy with upcoming games OD and Physint, both in development for Xbox. Physint will also be adapted for film and TV, while Kojima’s Death Stranding is coming to the big screen as well.
