In a recent interview, Hayley Atwell, the actress who brought Peggy Carter/Captain Carter to life, expressed her disappointment with how the character was portrayed and ultimately dispatched in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Atwell’s comments shed light on creative decisions made during production and offer insight into what could have been a more impactful moment for the beloved Avenger.
A Captain Carter Cut Short
The appearance of Captain Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was highly anticipated by fans. This alternate universe version, wielding a shield emblazoned with the Union Jack, represented a powerful and inspiring figure. However, her screen time was tragically brief, culminating in a swift and brutal demise at the hands of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch.
“I loved the idea that she’d be in the suit and have the shield,” Atwell began, “And if I’m really brutally honest, I was so disappointed with how they positioned her and what happened to her in that scene. It’s so small, and she gets frisbeed to death.” The moment, intended to showcase Wanda’s overwhelming power, felt anticlimactic for many viewers who had longed to see Captain Carter in action.
While the scene served its narrative purpose, it also robbed audiences of a potentially epic battle sequence. The iconic moment where Captain Carter quotes Steve Rogers’ famous line, “I could do this all day,” only to be immediately countered by Wanda’s devastating attack, felt rushed and ultimately unsatisfying.
“I felt that was like a bum steer and a complete disservice to the character,” Atwell added. She revealed that she attempted to offer suggestions for alternative scenes during production, but her ideas were ultimately rejected. “I tried on set to kind of go, ‘Can I just add? Can I just suggest?’ And they were like, ‘Sure, but no.'”
Looking ahead, Atwell is slated to return in Avengers: Doomsday, and fans are eager to see what the future holds for Captain Carter. Will she get a chance to redeem herself and showcase her full potential? Or will she remain relegated to brief cameos and ultimately tragic fates?
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, and if you’re looking to catch up on the Marvel Cinematic Universe before then, Marvel has put together a list of MCU movies and TV shows you should watch before it arrives. Whether Captain Carter will once again take center stage remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: her fans are hoping for a more substantial role in her next appearance.
