Grand Theft Auto is synonymous with a certain brand of chaotic fun. From the eclectic radio stations to the endless array of vehicles and the constant stream of toilet humor, it’s a world built on memorable quirks. But arguably more fundamental than all those elements is the thrill of the car chase – the adrenaline-fueled escape from the long arm of the law. Since the very beginning, GTA has been about committing crimes and getting away with it, and that “getting away” part is what truly defines the experience.

The Evolving Wanted System

The “Wanted” system, a core mechanic since the early days, represents the escalating state of emergency as the city’s police force deploys increasingly aggressive measures. Originally represented by pixelated police heads, it evolved into the iconic star system – a single star triggering a couple of beat cops for minor infractions, while six stars unleash a militarized battalion determined to bring you down. While GTA 6 returns the full six-star rating for the first time since Chinatown Wars in 2009, it’s far from a simple rehash.

During a hands-off demo at Rockstar’s Edinburgh HQ, we got a glimpse into the nuances of this revamped system. “We have this heat system,” explains Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North. “[The police] know what I look like and what I’m wearing. [If I find] a pair of glasses – I’ll put on this and this baseball hat. But they still know what I’m wearing, so I would need to go to a clothing store or call my personal vehicle, which has changes of outfits in the trunk.”

Beyond simply racking up stars, the system now incorporates new layers of information that the police can gather about you. These are represented by icons beneath the wanted stars:

  • A silhouette indicates a physical description.
  • A clothes hanger denotes what clothing you’re wearing.
  • A camera means you’ve been spotted on CCTV.

“You can see with these little icons on-screen, the police know what we’re driving,” says Nelson. “So we should just jump out the vehicle. They also know we’re a couple. You could split up, and that will also help lower the police’s perception of you.” This adds a new dimension to how you evade capture, requiring more than just speed and reckless abandon.

The system goes even deeper, impacting how crimes are reported. “The Wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law,” Nelson explains. This means stealth becomes a valuable tool – avoiding witnesses and security cameras can significantly reduce the police’s ability to track you.

Mastering the Manhunt

The changes extend beyond just evading capture; they influence how you commit crimes. “If being seen, either by people or CCTV cameras, arms your hunters with information, then denying them those descriptions potentially lends you a significant advantage,” Nelson explains. This opens up new gameplay opportunities – from strategically eliminating CCTV networks to carefully choosing your getaway routes.

For players who prefer a more tactical approach, the demo showcased how even direct confrontation can be managed. “I aimed the gun at the person, which defused the situation and they all ran,” Nelson explains. This highlights that violence isn’t always the answer; sometimes, simply brandishing a weapon is enough to deter potential witnesses and keep the wanted level low.

The return of the mask system adds another layer of complexity. Just as in Red Dead Redemption 2, covering your face protects your identity and makes it harder for the police to track you. This opens up possibilities for elaborate disguises and calculated escapes.

A New Era of GTA

The revamped “Wanted” system is more than just a visual update; it’s a fundamental shift in how players interact with the world of GTA. It encourages experimentation, rewards strategic thinking, and adds a new level of depth to the core gameplay loop. By enhancing this iconic mechanic, Rockstar is ensuring that even familiar activities feel fresh and exciting.

The possibilities are endless – from meticulously planning your escape routes to mastering the art of disguise. In GTA 6, reducing your wanted level is about far more than evading capture; it’s about actively outsmarting the police and manipulating their perception of you.

This evolution of the “Wanted” system perfectly encapsulates Rockstar’s vision for Grand Theft Auto 6: a familiar world with endless possibilities, where every action has consequences, and every escape is a chance to outwit the law. It’s a bold step forward that promises to redefine what it means to be a wanted criminal in the modern age.
