Get ready for a more grounded experience in GTA 6! Rockstar is introducing a refined version of Red Dead Redemption 2’s honor system, designed to make Jason and Lucia’s actions feel more impactful and the world react accordingly. This isn’t just about avoiding cops; it’s about building a reputation – or destroying one.
A Reputation System with Bite
While Arthur Morgan could seemingly commit atrocities and then redeem himself, Jason and Lucia won’t have that easy of a time. According to Rockstar North’s co-studio head Rob Nelson (via GTA 6 guide), the new system is more nuanced.
“There isn’t a right or wrong way to play this game, but consistent actions may have an impact in terms of how the world reacts to you and how the narrative plays out,” Nelson explains. Players will need to manage not only their Wanted Level but also their Criminal Profile. This means that even seemingly minor acts of aggression can have lasting consequences.
However, there’s a catch: not every act of violence will negatively impact your Criminal Profile. If you find yourself in a situation where force is the only viable option, then go ahead and shoot. But if you initiate conflict or escalate a situation unnecessarily, NPCs will remember. Conversely, small acts of kindness, like properly disposing of trash or being nice to animals, can actually improve your standing with the community.
Realism Over All-Power
This isn’t about Rockstar trying to teach players morality; it’s about creating a more believable and reactive world. “You are playing as criminals on the run, but the narrative is such that it makes most sense for them to do what they need to do while not drawing unnecessary attention (even though sometimes that happens),” Nelson explains.
“I think in previous GTA games you were a bit all-powerful,” Nelson adds. “You were the only one with an invisible arsenal hidden away. Apart from the police, everyone would run in terror from you if you started acting out. This world in is not like that.”
Safe Havens and More
If the chaos of Leonida becomes too much, players can retreat to their safehouses, which are designed to be more interactive and feel more like home, drawing inspiration from Red Dead Redemption 2’s camp system.
