In a surprising turn of events, former Rockstar Games developers embroiled in a legal battle with the studio are urging fans not to boycott the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6. Instead, they’re calling on players to support their fight against what they describe as union-busting tactics.
A Call for Support
In a video released by the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain, these former employees made it clear how they want fans to show solidarity. “We’re going to make this easy for you,” they state. “Don’t boycott GTA 6. Win justice for the people who helped make it.”
These developers poured years of “hard work, skill, and creativity” into GTA 6. They want players to experience the game they helped create, but also understand the context surrounding its development.
“But that doesn’t mean we want you to let Rockstar off the hook,” the devs emphasized. Instead of a boycott, they are asking supporters to contribute in other ways, such as purchasing custom t-shirts. The proceeds from these sales will directly support the fired workers and their ongoing legal case.
The Legal Battle
The conflict began on October 30, 2025, when 31 Rockstar employees at the studio’s UK office were terminated without warning or explanation. These individuals were members of the IWGB and actively involved in organizing a studio-wide union. Despite this setback, the union persevered and is now seeking voluntary recognition from Rockstar.
The fired employees accuse their former employer of union busting, while Rockstar claims the developers were dismissed for “gross misconduct,” including leaking confidential company information in a public forum. Rockstar denies any connection between the firings and union membership or activity.
A preliminary tribunal recently upheld the right of these workers to pursue “blacklisting” allegations against Rockstar, with the trial scheduled to begin on September 10. This legal battle is far from over.
GTA 6 Hype and Questions
Despite the controversy, excitement for GTA 6 remains high. Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, described the game’s preorder numbers as “unprecedented,” although they have refrained from releasing specific figures due to concerns that they could be “misleading.”
With less than 100 days until release, many questions still surround GTA 6. An extended gameplay reveal is scheduled for August 27 and promises to shed more light on the game’s features and story.
