As anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 continues to build, recent reports suggest that the upcoming title from developer Rockstar Games may allow players to carry cocaine and snort it off their hands at virtually any time — a feature that could mark a significant evolution in how video games handle illicit substances. With the game’s next-generation hardware reveal imminent and previews offering new glimpses into its systems, industry observers are increasingly convinced that Rockstar has an opportunity to push drug mechanics far beyond the tired stat boosts common across the medium.
The presence of drugs is already well established in GTA 6’s narrative. As demonstrated during the August gameplay reveal, Jason and Lucia find themselves caught up in a drug deal gone wrong within the opening moments of the game. Later, while the couple provide security for a VIP at a media company, one of their clients retreats upstairs to use cocaine in a conference room. These references are hardly surprising for a franchise that has long embraced its provocative subject matter, nor is it unprecedented for Rockstar to incorporate drugs as a gameplay mechanic — protagonists in both Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 were able to partake in illicit substances.
A Departure From Formulaic Drug Mechanics
In most big-budget titles, however, drug use tends to reduce to a mechanical afterthought. Substances typically grant a short-lived stat boost, often paired with a minor debuff if overused. Recent examples include Starfield and The Outer Worlds 2, both of which treat substance use as a lightweight system rather than an integrated narrative element. In Starfield, overusing stimulants slows oxygen recovery and reduces carry capacity by 20 percent, with addiction easily cured through a simple doctor’s visit — though it becomes more cumbersome outside major cities. The Outer Worlds 2 offers a similarly light touch: overusing its tobacco-fueled inhaler can trigger a permanent “drug addiction” flaw that diminishes restorative effects while reducing toxicity.
Both systems represent very minor consequences, and they stand in stark contrast to the depth Rockstar has signaled for its latest project. Aaron Garbut, co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar North, recently told Game Informer that the studio deliberately rejected trade-offs between scope and detail. “Normally you compromise scale for detail or detail for interaction, but with this project we went the other way — everything is dialed up, detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction and density,” Garbut said. “I don’t think we have ever created anything close to this before.” Elsewhere in Game Informer’s preview, Garbut noted that GTA 6’s choice-driven gameplay aims to inspire multiple playthroughs.

With all that ambition in mind, analysts expect drug use in GTA 6 to carry far more intricate consequences than players have seen elsewhere. The possibilities are numerous: diet and exercise routines already affect how Jason and Lucia look and feel, so repeated cocaine use might curb their appetites and lead to slimmer builds over time.

Social Consequences and Relationship Dynamics
Beyond physical changes, the most compelling potential lies in how drug use affects relationships. It would stand to reason that the optional romance between Jason and Lucia could suffer if one partner uses drugs excessively while the other abstains — potentially locking players out of a romance route altogether. Conversely, if both characters consume regularly, the relationship might remain unaffected.
Previews have also highlighted that NPCs in GTA 6 are considerably more complex and multifaceted in their reactions than those in most other games. Simply put, just because players can use cocaine at any time does not necessarily mean they should. Miami’s cocaine culture has been immortalized through cultural touchstones like Miami Vice and Scarface, but the real world carries consequences for openly using drugs — from dirty looks and social media backlash to being asked to leave or even having police called. Given GTA 6’s level of realism, similar logic could apply within the game.
It would also make sense that players who commit to an open or heavy drug-using playstyle receive unique missions as a result. Maintaining a cocaine habit is expensive, and it stands to reason that certain clients — such as those making money selling drugs — might decline to employ bodyguards who are visibly under the influence.
Looking Ahead
While Rockstar has not confirmed specific drug mechanics for GTA 6, the trajectory of its previews and the studio’s stated ambitions strongly suggest that substance use will be treated as a more consequential element than in previous entries. The game is expected to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with a PC version slated for release later.
