Grand Theft Automatycznie 6 will be eligible for competition at the 2026 Game Awards, resolving uncertainty about whether Rockstar’s most anticipated title could miss the cutoff and slip into next year’s ceremony. The game launches on November 19, a date that falls just inside the awards’ eligibility window.
The confusion arose because nominations for Geoff Keighley’s showcase typically fall around the same time as GTA 6’s release. Had the game missed the deadline, it would have been pushed to the 2027 Game Awards, forcing it to compete against titles nearly a year after its initial hype.

A section on the Game Awards FAQ page lists the eligibility cutoff for this year’s show in a way that appears tailored to accommodate GTA 6. The page states: “Gry must be made commercially available to customers on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT. In the Players’ Voice category, games must ship on or before November 30, 2026.”

With a November 19 release, GTA 6 clears that first hurdle. The cutoff date is notably later than last year’s: for the released by November 17, nominations had already been distributed well in advance, pushing that phase of voting significantly earlier.
Beyond the formal deadline, another timing consideration remains. Critics who vote on the awards—Kotaku does not participate—must be able to play games before forming opinions. Outlets handle this differently: some circulate ballots democratically, while others rely on senior staff to decide which games to back. Since no one can play everything released in a year, reviewers often defer to those who actually finished a game when deciding nominations or winners.
Rockstar has promoted GTA 6 as a long game with a massive map that encourages multiple playthroughs—a demanding task for any reviewer and especially challenging for outlets seeking multiple opinions before casting final votes. According to industry leaker NateTheHate, codes for the game could go out to media and creators before the end of October, providing time for outlets to assess its quality.

By landing just under the deadline, GTA 6 enters one of the weaker Game Of The Year fields in recent years. While Resident Evil Requiem and Control Resonant have both received rave reviews, there are no clear frontrunners as seen in past years with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Elden Ring, or Baldur’s Gate 3.
Prediction markets currently give GTA 6 a 68-percent chance of winning before anyone has even gotten their hands on it. Just over a month remains to find out if Rockstar’s latest can live up to the hype.
