GTA 6: An Animation Overload – Double Red Dead Redemption 2, Ten Times Bigger Than GTA 5!

We all knew Grand Theft Auto 6 was going to be massive, but the sheer scale of its animation work is truly mind-blowing. A new deep dive into the game’s development reveals that Rockstar Games has crafted a staggering 600,000 unique animations, putting everything else in perspective.

Following the premiere of Netflix’s “GTA 6: An Extended Look,” a revealing article from The New York Times shed light on the incredible detail that went into bringing Leonidas and its inhabitants to life. From the bustling streets filled with pedestrians to the diverse wildlife above and below the waves, every moving element in GTA 6 has been meticulously animated.

To illustrate just how ambitious this undertaking is, Rockstar developers compared GTA 6’s animation count to previous titles. Grand Theft Auto 5 boasted an impressive 55,000 animations, while Red Dead Redemption 2 featured a still-remarkable 300,000. This means that GTA 6 isn’t just bigger; it’s exponentially more detailed in its movement and character interactions.

The sheer volume of animation work highlights the dedication Rockstar has poured into creating a truly immersive open world. It makes you appreciate how much effort went into even the smallest details, making GTA 6 feel like a living, breathing environment.

Aaron Garbut, art director and studio co-head at Rockstar North, emphasized the importance of these small touches. “Every room in the game, somebody thought about this,” he explained. “Who’s sitting where, what they’re drinking, the marks that are left on the table. The pictures on the wall will have the people that are in that room, with their tattoos on their arms and their family behind them. That whole thing has been made, and built, and photographed, and placed in this random room in a random building in a huge city, in a world.”
