Nintendo is set to release its long-awaited The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake just two weeks after the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, a scheduling clash that Saturday Night Live recently spoofed as gaming’s “Barbenheimer”.

According to a report by Mike McWhertor for Polygon, the timing places Nintendo alongside Grand Theft Auto’s Rockstar Games as one of only two publishers willing to bring major releases to retail in November. The network’s staff writers turned this into a sketch depicting Zelda‘s Link and GTA 6‘s Jason competing for attention—guns versus fairies, sex versus puzzles.

The report comes amid Nintendo’s steady stream of monthly exclusive releases throughout the year. Three weeks after Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, players now await Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. McWhertor describes that title as a “perfectly chill compilation” drawing on WaveRace, Pilotwings, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Wii Sports.

The sketch is silly and a bit cringe, but it’s not condescending to games (any more than SNL is to any other object of its satire), and it’s fairly even-handed in its ridicule. Link is prissy, Jason is a dumb boor.

Nintendo has chosen to develop the Ocarina of Time remake internally rather than hand it to an outside studio such as Grezzo, which previously handled Ocarina of Time 3D and the Link’s Awakening remake. A “plausible but unverified rumor” suggests Nintendo is treating the project with the status of a brand-new mainline Zelda game.

The November release date adds to the sense of event, though McWhertor notes this may be overstating things. The two titles land two weeks apart, and Ocarina of Time, despite its prestige, operates on “a dramatically smaller scale” that cannot realistically challenge GTA 6 in sales.

The SNL sketch posits GTA 6 vs Ocarina of Time as a kind of Barbenheimer… That’s probably overstating things — the two games’ release dates are actually two weeks apart, and Ocarina, for all its cachet, is a production on a dramatically smaller scale that can’t hope to challenge GTA in sales terms.

The writer argues Nintendo’s willingness to compete with Rockstar reflects “common sense” rather than bravery, since the games target different audiences beyond core gaming fans. Yet there may be value in the clash: if the culture-shape event gains traction publicly, Ocarina of Time could ride GTA 6‘s momentum to wider recognition.

GTA 6 had been seen as monopolizing gaming this fall. If SNL’s portrayal of it as a “duopoly” resonates, Nintendo’s gamble may pay off.
