Google Faces Potential Record EU Fine Over Market Dominance Abuse

The clash between Google and the European Union Commission is intensifying, with the tech titan now teetering on the brink of a staggering fine that could reach into the hundreds of millions of euros if it fails to comply with the regulators’ demands.

According to a recent report by the German outlet Handelsblatt, the EU Commission—already on record for accusing Google of breaching the Digital Markets Act (DMA)—is poised to levy a record‑setting penalty on the company. Proceedings are approaching their final stages, and Alphabet’s flagship search engine could be hit with a hefty financial blow unless it implements the mandated changes.

The antitrust investigation, launched in 2025, stemmed from EU officials alleging that Google had been giving its own services an unfair advantage by prioritizing them in search results, thereby disadvantaging competitors.

Handelsblatt notes that EU officials are in unanimous agreement about imposing the maximum fine, though the ultimate decision rests with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The verdict is slated to be announced before the summer recess, and the outlet warns that this could become the highest penalty ever imposed under the new Digital Markets Act.

In a recent briefing to Reuters, Thomas Regnier, spokesperson for the European Commission, emphasized that the agency’s priority lies in ensuring Google adheres to regulatory standards rather than immediately levying substantial penalties. “Even as we negotiate future remedies, we are prepared to advance to the next stage without delay,” Regnier stated.

Conversely, a Google representative criticized the adjustments imposed on the company’s search engine under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), labeling them as the “most significant downgrade in the product’s history.” They warned that these changes have resulted in a “second‑rate experience for European users.”

Earlier this month, the European Commission declared that Google’s proposed remedy failed to satisfy the regulator’s criteria. Consequently, the tech giant has been granted additional time to submit a revised solution that meets the required standards.
