According to a report for Rock Paper Shotgun, the new diplomacy update for settlement-builder Going Medieval adds a system where players can send caravans to NPC settlements to request help in exchange for services or goods.

In the game, 12 NPC factions are split into six faction types. Players have traditionally been able to interact with them by being friendly or attacking outright — though the cannibal faction type cannot be befriended. The new system builds on this by letting players send a caravan to another settlement in return for a range of boons.

The rewards depend on how friendly players are with that faction, the current state of their own settlement, and what they carry in their caravan. These can include the NPC settlement protecting your caravan, clearing one bandit camp instead of sending out your own warriors, basic resources, defence and offence support, or a rare object.

You do have to do something in return. That might mean delivering livestock, clearing a bandit camp yourself, fighting alongside the friendly settlement, or lending them one of your own settlers.

Players can only maintain one active diplomatic deal at a time; once it is complete, another can be started.

Non-hostile factions may also send an envoy “representing the faction coming to you with a specific request already in hand — you can’t choose what is asked of you, but you do choose what they receive in return.” This effectively functions as a quest to carry out for another settlement.

The update additionally allows players to hire others for jobs such as farming and tailoring, or pay mercenaries to assist with more physical tasks. Further additions include faction-specific resources, region market changes, new events, quality-of-life improvements, and bug fixes.
