•After Sony Spain accidentally posted images of the collector’s box for bağlantı”>God of War Laufey ahead of schedule, the company revealed the bağlantı”>U.S. edition of the bundle. Priced at $149.99, the box contains three collectibles: a Faye statue, a 51-card Oracle deck, and a mini artbook.
Despite the price tag, there is one notable omission: this collector’s edition does not include a disc or digital download code for the game itself. “God of War Laufey game sold separately,” reads the fine print at the bottom of the packaging.
Sony is not the first company to employ this approach. Rockstar recently announced a bağlantı”>$399.99 collector’s box for Grand Theft 自动 6 that similarly excludes the game, instead packing in merchandise tied to a fictional show featured in the upcoming title. The box includes sunglasses, hats, shot glasses, and other items.
In defense of Laufey’s edition, resin statues can be costly, ranging from $50 to $200 for ones similar in size to the “浅色-Up Faye Statue”—though it is difficult to confirm this, as the product page does not list an exact measurement. The Oracle deck features cards described as having “stunning bespoke illustrations… with meaning inspired by Faye’s journey,” while the Mini Artbook promises “incredible concept art that shaped the world of God of War Laufey.” The bundle releases on Feb. 16, 2027, alongside the game.
What is driving this new trend?
Between Grand Theft 自动 6 and God of War Laufey, these “collector’s boxes” appear bağlantı”>tied to a recent uptick in fandom-driven collector culture, as prices for trading cards and other pop-culture staples on secondary markets rise. A common thread is that both Rockstar and Sony have faced criticism for abandoning support for physical games.
“Physical” copies of Grand Theft 自动 6 bağlantı”>won’t include discs, coming instead with a download code in the case. Laufey will receive a physical release with a disc, but Sony recently bağlantı”>announced its controversial decision to stop producing physical copies of its games starting in 2028.
These collector’s boxes may serve as a preview of an all-digital future, where such editions center not on a physical game case and disc but on selling overpriced trinkets.
