Gen.G quickly rebounded from their opening-game loss to defeat LYON 2-1 on Sunday, Oct. 25, completing the Swiss Stage at 3-0 and securing a spot in the Worlds 2026 quarterfinals. LYON dropped into the 2-1 bracket and will need one more victory in Round 4 to advance.
The series was the final matchup of Round 3 in the 2-0 pool, meaning the winner would always advance directly. LYON entered the match undefeated at the event so far, and their confidence would surely have soared after taking the lead against a team ranked fourth in the Elo power rankings.
It wasn’t meant to be, however, as a Gen.G lineup featuring Rumble, Qiyana, Anivia, Jhin, and Alistar ultimately overpowered the Mexican squad.
The 2026 League of Legends World Championship Swiss Stage opened on Oct. 23 and runs through the 31st at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center in Allen, Texas. Sixteen teams play five rounds, with three wins sending a team through and three losses ending their run. Fearless Draft is in effect, so any champion picked in one game is locked out for the remainder of that series. The tournament carries a $5 million prize pool, with $1 million reserved for the champions.

How the series swung
LYON took game one behind two Barons. They claimed the first the moment it spawned at 20 minutes without losing a player, won a five-vs-five fight for the second, and finished at the Nexus.
Canyon’s Qiyana kept missing its ultimates for Gen.G, which cost the LCK champions in the big fights. Canyon had spoken before the series about Western teams closing the gap, but Gen.G soon fixed things. A clean top-lane teamfight at 23 minutes in game two gave them Baron and the Dragon Soul, and before LYON had time to react, the series was level.
The decider turned on a teamfight where Gen.G lost Galio early. Kiin then joined the fight on Camille with Teleport, and Gen.G went on to break the mid inhibitor and collect three dragons before winning the final fight.

The gap on paper, and why LYON are still dangerous
The Elo power rankings had Gen.G fourth at 1868 with a 118-30 record before the game. LYON sat 28th at 1720 with a 34-28 record. It’s a big gap but anyone who was watching these two for the first time this weekend wouldn’t have noticed it until the final two games. Before then, LYON were more-than-competitive.
And why not? The Mexican org came in with real momentum. They opened the Swiss Stage with 1-0 wins over Team Secret Whales and Karmine Corp. Going back to July, LYON also beat G2 Esport 3-0 at MSI 2026, with Inspired named series MVP.
Gen.G’s approach to going a game down was simple: they tightened up around Baron and Dragon Soul timings and let Kiin’s Teleport plays decide the last fight. LYON can still make the quarterfinals, of course, but a first loss now stains their copybook a little.
Earlier in the evening, Dplus KIA swept Movistar KOI 2-0, and Smash recorded the first pentakill of the tournament in game one of that series. Movistar KOI also move into the 2-1 pool.
