The studio head behind Gears of War: E-Day has publicly addressed mounting anxiety among his staff about potential layoffs, insisting that the next game in the franchise will not take nearly as long to develop and pointing to plans for future entries in the series. Mike Crump, who leads The Coalition, issued his reassurance following a report detailing deep uncertainty at the studio during Microsoft’s ongoing restructuring of its gaming division.

The comments come after Eurogamer reported earlier this month that morale inside The Coalition had grown tense in the run-up to E-Day’s early access launch. Rather than offering an outright guarantee about job security, Crump framed his message around focus and execution, telling the BBC that he urges both himself and his team to concentrate on what they can actually influence.

A Studio Under Pressure

The concerns trace back to a Eurogamer investigation into the mood at The Coalition following E-Day’s release. One source described an unusually cautious atmosphere, noting that staff were hesitant to celebrate until months after launch “just in case.” Another developer told the outlet they expected “the next wave” of cuts or a possible reorganization under Activision later this year.

The anxiety is rooted in a broader wave of reductions across Microsoft’s gaming business. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s much-discussed “reset” has already seen nearly 2,000 employees let go within the current financial year, with more expected to follow. Several studios have departed entirely or are being wound down, and Microsoft has reshuffled its portfolio by folding Halo and Sea of Thieves developer Rare under Call of Duty giant Activision, while Grounded maker Obsidian moved under Fallout publisher Bethesda.

The Coalition has largely sidestepped the worst of these cuts, though not without incident. E-Day’s story director was reportedly laid off just one week before the game entered early access, a timing that only amplified concerns among remaining staff about what might come next.

“What I say to myself, what I say to the team, is we need to focus on the things that we can control. For us that’s about shipping a great game that people are going to love and I feel like, as a team, we’ve done that.”

A Foundation for the Future

While Crump stopped short of promising that The Coalition would escape the fate befalling so many other Xbox studios this summer, he did signal optimism about the franchise’s trajectory. He described E-Day as a “great foundation” for future games in the series and made clear there are plans to continue Gears of War beyond the prequel.

Crump specifically noted that the next game will not take nearly as long to make, an implicit acknowledgment that developing E-Day — a story set decades before the original saga — required building new systems and world-building from scratch. A more mature production pipeline could mean faster development times going forward.

The promise lands against a backdrop of prior commitments from Microsoft. In June 2024, the company pledged to continue the overarching Gears of War story and resolve the cliffhanger left by Gears 5’s ending, even as it first delivered this prequel with E-Day. The lingering question now is whether The Coalition will be around in a position to make good on that promise.

Looking Ahead

For now, staff at The Coalition are waiting to see how the situation develops over the coming months. With layoffs still casting a shadow over Microsoft’s gaming division and no definitive word on whether the studio will be reorganized or spared, Crump’s message remains one of measured optimism rather than certainty.

The industry will be watching closely as E-Day settles into its post-launch phase and beyond. Whether The Coalition can build on this “great foundation” — and retain the team needed to do so — will likely become clear in the months ahead, once the dust settles over Microsoft’s ongoing reset.
