GameStop’s Ryan Cohen Makes $26 Million Bet on His Own Stock

September 24, 2026 · Gamer24H Editorial Team

GameStop Corp. CEO Ryan Cohen has executed one of his most conspicuous financial gambits yet, purchasing more than 1.1 million shares of his own company’s stock and spending more than $26.4 million in the process. The disclosure, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, reveals that Cohen now controls more than 40 million shares of the retailer — roughly 9% of the company — after buying the latest tranche at around $23 per share. The move came to light in a regulatory filing on September 21, and the news sent GameStop’s stock climbing more than 3% in the immediate aftermath, a familiar reaction to Cohen’s repeated pattern of buying back his own company’s shares.

For a CEO who has built a reputation as a relentless believer in his own business, these buybacks are more than a personal investment strategy; they read as a public signal of confidence. When a company repurchases its own stock, fewer shares remain available on the open market, which can compress supply and push the overall share price upward. The SEC filings accompanying Cohen’s purchases offer no explanation for the rationale behind the trades, but analysts have long interpreted such moves as a bullish statement from management about the company’s outlook.

A Pattern of Confidence

This transaction was not an isolated event. Cohen has repeatedly deployed his personal capital to shore up GameStop’s stock, having earlier this year purchased 1 million shares when the price was lower. Some of the company’s directors joined the buying spree this month as well, adding to a wave of insider confidence in the retailer’s direction.

The strategy mirrors tactics used elsewhere in the market. Anthony Noto, the CEO of online banking company SoFi, bought back his own company’s stock three times so far this year as the price fell, demonstrating that buybacks have become a common defensive and offensive maneuver among tech-forward executives.

When companies buy back their own shares, this can lead to an immediate boost in the overall share price, as fewer shares are available on the open market.

Market analysts

While the filings remain deliberately vague on motivation, the cumulative effect of Cohen’s holdings is significant. His ongoing accumulation has made him one of the most prominent individual shareholders in the company’s history, and his continued buying suggests he still sees substantial value in GameStop’s transformation.

Between Buybacks and Bigger Ambitions

Cohen and GameStop have dominated headlines for months, largely because of an ambitious bid to acquire eBay. However, that pursuit appears to be cooling. Bloomberg reported that Cohen was weighing his options going forward, including pulling the $56 billion bid for eBay entirely or partnering with the company instead of attempting to buy it outright.

The eBay idea reportedly originated in an unlikely setting — Cohen came up with the concept while on the toilet. He has also floated a separate vision for re-selling digital game items, though he has not yet explained how such a scheme could function in practice.

Meanwhile, GameStop’s core business continues to thrive, though the growth is decidedly not driven by video games. The company now earns the bulk of its revenue from collectibles, a shift that is obvious to anyone who has visited one of its stores recently. GameStop has turned its business around through this new focus on collectibles, alongside employee layoffs and store closures.

Looking Ahead

Despite the restructuring, GameStop has recently announced that it is reopening some stores, signaling a continued commitment to its physical footprint. As Cohen’s buybacks and the eBay saga play out, the market will be watching closely to see whether his personal bets and the company’s strategic pivots align — and whether the retailer’s collectibles-driven revival can sustain the momentum that has kept its stock in the spotlight.
