About this game

The Genre Genesis: From Modern Titans to 1993 Pioneers

Multi-character cooperative puzzle-platforming, complementary character ability synergy (Speed/Jumping, Combat/Archery, Defense/Gliding), time-travel dimension hopping, and witty Norse humor—from Trine, Pikmin, Overwatch (The Lost Vikings arcade easter eggs), Heroes of the Storm, and It Takes Two to modern cooperative puzzle-platformers—trace their undisputed royal genesis to 1992/1993 with Silicon & Synapse’s The Lost Vikings.

Conceived and directed by Blizzard Entertainment founders Michael Morhaime, Allen Adham, and Frank Pearce (under their original studio name Silicon & Synapse) with design and art by Ronald Millar for Interplay Productions on the Super Nintendo (SNES), Commodore Amiga, Sega Genesis, and PC (DOS), The Lost Vikings holds monumental historical stature: it was the breakout masterpiece that put Blizzard Entertainment on the global video game map.

Platform Context & Gaming Environment: The Abduction of the Vikings

The Lost Vikings placed players in command of three eccentric Viking warriors from the village of Byrg: Erik the Swift, Baleog the Fierce, and Olaf the Stout. While asleep, the evil alien zoo collector Tomator, emperor of the Croutonian Empire, abducts the trio aboard his starship.

To return home to their wives and children, the three Vikings must journey through bizarre time portals across five historical eras (Prehistoric Era, Ancient Egypt, The Great Factory, The Wacky World, and Tomator’s Spaceship).

Popularity & Cultural Standing: The Genesis of Blizzard Entertainment

The Lost Vikings was an enormous international critical and commercial blockbuster, winning the 1993 Best Strategy Game of the Year from Electronic Gaming Monthly and near-perfect scores across Europe (93% from Super Play, 90% from Amiga Format). It established Silicon & Synapse as master craftsmen right before they renamed the company to Blizzard Entertainment.

Gameplay Mechanics & Technical Innovations

The Lost Vikings established brilliant cooperative puzzle mechanics:

  • The Three Complementary Viking Heroes: Switch between heroes on the fly using the shoulder buttons:
    • Erik the Swift: The only Viking who can jump; sprints at high speed and smashes through brick walls with his hard helmet!
    • Baleog the Fierce: The combat specialist; wields a broadsword for close combat and an unlimited quiver of arrows to hit distant switches and kill alien sentinels.
    • Olaf the Stout: The defensive stalwart; holds an impenetrable titanium shield to block laser fire and arrows, holds his shield above his head as a Hang Glider to float across chasms, and acts as a stepping stool for Erik!
  • Strict Three-Hero Survival Rule: Every single puzzle requires all three Vikings to reach the exit door alive; if even one Viking dies, the stage must be restarted!
  • Inventory Item Swapping: Pass keys, bombs, smart bombs, and food between the four inventory slots of adjacent Vikings to solve environmental puzzles.

Historical Legacy & Archival Preservation

The Lost Vikings is permanently enshrined in Blizzard Entertainment’s golden gaming heritage. As Blizzard’s foundational puzzle-platforming triumph, its historical legacy in video game history is eternal.
