About this game
The Genre Genesis: From Modern Titans to 1993 Pioneers
Victorian steampunk top-down shooters, 2-player cooperative mercenary synergy, Node activation spatial puzzles, character class weapon progression, and industrial chiptune dance music—from Alien Swarm, The Ascent, Enter the Gungeon, Helldivers, and TowerFall to modern top-down shooters—trace their undisputed royal peak to 1993 with The Bitmap Brothers’ The Chaos Engine (known as Soldiers of Fortune in North America).
Conceived, directed, and designed by British legends Dan Malone and Mike Montgomery with programming by Steve Kelly and a driving, futuristic techno soundtrack composed by Richard Joseph for The Bitmap Brothers (published by Renegade Software) on the Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, Sega Genesis, SNES, and PC (DOS), The Chaos Engine was an earth-shattering critical and commercial blockbuster: it stood as the definitive pinnacle of top-down cooperative action in the 16-bit era.
Platform Context & Gaming Environment: Baron Fortesque’s Temporal Machine
The Chaos Engine presented a dark alternative Victorian steampunk timeline. The eccentric inventor Baron Fortesque invents a time-and-space manipulating machine called the Chaos Engine: when the machine achieves sentience, it warps the British Isles into a nightmare realm filled with mutated monsters, dinosaurs, and mechanical automatons.
Six hardened international mercenaries are hired to fight through four diverse time zones (The Forest, The Workshop, The Fortesque Mansions, and The Cellars) to shut down the engine.
Popularity & Cultural Standing: The Bitmap Brothers Masterpiece
The Chaos Engine was an astronomical commercial and critical blockbuster across the globe, sweeping every major European game award (1993 Game of the Year from SEGA Magazine, 93% from Amiga Format, 92% from CU Amiga). It won the prestigious ECTS Best Action Game award.
