About this game
The Genre Genesis: From Modern Titans to 1987 Pioneers
Multi-event extreme sports simulations, timing-based trick combos, and West Coast beach youth culture—from Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Kelly Slater’s Pro Surfer, Riders Republic, and Wii Sports Resort to modern extreme sports games—reached a global pop-culture peak in June 1987 with Epyx’s California Games.
Conceived and designed by Ken Nicholson with programming by Chuck Sommerville and music by Chris Grigg for Epyx on the Commodore 64, Apple II, Atari ST, Amiga, NES, Master System, and DOS, California Games was an astronomical worldwide phenomenon: it was the highest-selling and most successful video game in Epyx’s history, selling over 2 million copies worldwide.
Platform Context & Gaming Environment: The Golden State Coast
California Games brought the sun, surf, and skate culture of Southern California to life with colorful, detailed graphics and authentic chiptune renditions of the surf rock anthem “Louie Louie”. Up to eight players competed representing iconic 1980s corporate sponsors (Ocean Pacific, Casio, Santa Cruz, Vans, BMX Action).
Popularity & Cultural Standing: The Extreme Sports Blockbuster
California Games was an enormous international commercial and critical blockbuster throughout 1987 and 1988, winning the 1987 Action Game of the Year from Computer Gaming World. It defined the extreme sports genre and popularized skateboarding, surfing, and footbag across global youth culture.
Gameplay Mechanics & Technical Innovations
California Games featured six distinct extreme sports events:
- Half-Pipe Skateboarding: Pump up and down the U-ramp to gain vert air, executing handplants, kickturns, and aerial spins while managing board landing angles.
- Footbag (Hacky Sack): Juggle the footbag using toe kicks, knee bounces, headbutts, and ax-kicks, scoring trick combos and hitting passing seagulls for bonus points!
- Surfing: Catch massive Pacific ocean waves, carve cutbacks along the wave curl, launch aerial maneuvers, and pull into barrels while avoiding wipeouts.
- Roller Skating: Skate down the Hollywood beachfront boardwalk, leaping over cracks, soda cans, beach balls, and shoes.
- BMX Dirt Bike Racing: Race through a rugged dirt track against the clock, timing bunny hops, table-tops, 360-degree aerial spins, and obstacle clears.
- Flying Disc (Frisbee): Set throw angle and velocity, then switch to the receiver sprinting across the park lawn to execute a diving catch.
Historical Legacy & Archival Preservation
California Games is permanently inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame and the Smithsonian Institution. As Ken Nicholson and Epyx’s supreme multi-sport triumph, its legacy is immortal.
