During a recent conversation with Gamertag Radio, Xbox chief Matt Booty offered fresh insight into Microsoft’s evolving stance on game exclusivity.
Earlier today, the Redmond‑based company confirmed that both Gears of War: E‑Day and Clockwork Revolution will remain exclusive to consoles. Gears of War: E‑Day, which launched on October 6, was reportedly nearly finished for the PS5 before the decision was made.
Booty emphasized that Microsoft’s flagship multiplayer and live‑service titles will continue to be available across multiple platforms. “If we’ve already committed to something for players, we’ll keep that promise,” he said. “We’ll make the right decision—though not necessarily a quick one. When we set a release date, we’ll also specify the platforms, and it will be handled on a case‑by‑case basis.”
The use of the same ambiguous phrasing that previously surfaced when Sony acquired third‑party publishers Bethesda and Activision could raise concerns among PS5 owners, hinting at a future where platform loyalty may be tested.
Over the past 18 months, a significant number of Xbox games have found their way onto Sony’s console as well. Today’s Xbox Showcase saw several new titles announced to be releasing simultaneously on the PS5, such as State of Decay 3, Senua, and Spyro: A Realm Beyond.
In a surprising twist, Booty, the developer behind these games, stated that their “big multiplayer games” will continue to be available across multiple platforms. However, this statement raises questions about titles like Gears of War: E-Day, which not only offers a single-player experience but also heavily emphasizes competitive online multiplayer and co-op gameplay.
During the Gears of War Direct, a post-release roadmap for the title was unveiled, hinting at its transition into live service territory. This move could potentially broaden the game’s player base and extend its lifespan, but it also introduces new challenges in terms of maintaining balance and engagement for players across multiple platforms.
While titles such as Senua’s Saga and Spyro: A Realm Beyond have traditionally been seen as single‑player experiences, it’s surprising to learn they’re slated for the PlayStation 5. In contrast, Clockwork Revolution has yet to receive any platform announcement.
It appears that Microsoft may still be refining its messaging, and we could be left in the dark about which games will appear on the PS5 until official release dates are disclosed.
