FromSoftware Teams Up With Nintendo to Make “The Duskbloods” More Accessible on Switch 2

FromSoftware, the studio behind critically acclaimed titles like Elden Ring, is partnering with Nintendo for an exclusive release of their upcoming PvPvE multiplayer game, The Duskbloods, on the new Nintendo Switch 2. While details about the specific reasons behind this unique collaboration remain under wraps, FromSoftware president and director Hidetaka Miyazaki recently shed light on how Nintendo’s involvement has been instrumental in shaping the game’s design.

Nintendo’s Crucial Role in Refining “The Duskbloods”

FromSoftware games are renowned for their challenging gameplay and often cryptic storytelling. While this approach has resonated with a dedicated fanbase, it also presents unique challenges when adapting these mechanics to a platform like the Nintendo Switch 2, which caters to a broader audience. Miyazaki emphasized that Nintendo’s feedback and support have been invaluable in making The Duskbloods more approachable for new players.

“Of course, the game isn’t out yet, so there are still many aspects to consider,” Miyazaki told IGN”>told IGN. “But regarding our current relationship and how we envision it progressing, the systems and overall ruleset of the game are quite unique. Having someone who can consistently provide feedback, support, additional ideas, and especially balancing – because these features are complex and difficult – this partnership is definitely key to that.”

He continued, “Historically, we haven’t been great at instantly conveying how a game works and how players can succeed. We often just drop players into the world and hope they figure it out. In this case, Nintendo is the right partner for better conveying that information in a way that is understandable to the player; it definitely suits their strengths.”

Balancing Challenge and Approachability

Last year’s Nightreign spin-off offered a streamlined version of the Elden Ring experience, packaged as a roguelike. While this made it easier to digest, it also meant players had less opportunity to truly master its intricacies. With online PvP playing a central role in The Duskbloods, any disparity in player knowledge could lead to even more pronounced and punishing consequences.

We’re eager to see how this approach translates into the upcoming alpha test. It seems FromSoftware is genuinely enjoying their collaboration with Nintendo. “Regarding why we initially decided to partner with Nintendo, we had a chance to discuss the game idea with them, and they seemed very excited and receptive,” Miyazaki explained. “They seemed forward-thinking about how to execute it. Even before considering the business aspects, that alone gave me reassurance for moving forward.”
