In a fresh wave of community creativity, modders have once again dropped a free tweak that dramatically reshapes the experience of one of Capcom’s most celebrated modern titles.

Thanks to the ingenuity of a skilled developer, the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 now features a mod that lets players tackle the main campaign side‑by‑side with a friend—offering a tantalizing glimpse of what an official multiplayer mode could look like in future installments of the franchise.

The project, recently uploaded to NexusMods by the well‑known creator “claybtv,” successfully links two concurrent sessions, each player controlling their own Leon S. Kennedy.

Even though the original 2023 release was crafted exclusively for solo play, the new tool maintains real‑time synchronization of enemies, narrative events, doors, and alarms across both players’ screens.

While early results are surprisingly stable, the author has candidly noted that the mod remains in beta, and players may encounter technical hurdles that prevent them from completing the full campaign cooperatively. To experience this multiplayer experiment, users must install the files through Fluffy Mod Manager, create a game account, and position both characters at the exact same spot to allow the server to connect them without errors.

Despite being an unofficial mod still in active development, the current build suffers from noticeable performance hiccups. Players report frequent FPS drops, largely because the system continuously scans the environment and enemy movements from the perspective of the guest player, resulting in choppy motion. Additionally, simply opening the inventory freezes the game for both participants—a flaw the creator says will be addressed shortly. The mod’s early triumph has quickly reignited fan enthusiasm for an official cooperative mode in the highly anticipated Resident Evil 5 remake. The game was already teased by revelations at the conclusion of the “Separate Ways” DLC, which expanded the original title. While the studio has yet to confirm its plans, the remake is now part of a growing roster of community‑crafted co‑op mods that also include titles such as Yakuza 0, Lies of P, STALKER, the PC port of Super Mario 64, and several FromSoftware games.
