I’ve been running competitive FPS titles on 2.4GHz dongle setups for years, but the gap between proprietary RF and Bluetooth keeps narrowing, and I want to understand where the real-world latency floor actually sits now. With modern FHSS implementations in the 2.4GHz band, how much of the historical “Bluetooth is always higher latency” assumption still holds up when you compare a well-tuned BT 5.

Historically, the gap between these protocols was stark, and it still matters for competitive play. Bluetooth Classic (BR/EDR) was never viable for FPS titles—it runs adaptive frequency hopping plus retransmission-based error correction, pushing input latency into the 100-200ms range with a polling ceiling around 125-200Hz. When Razer and Logitech pushed proprietary 2.4GHz dongles (HyperSpeed, Lightspeed), they sidestepped the Bluetooth stack entirely with custom protocols running 1000Hz polling (1ms) and aggressive link-layer ARQ. That’s why every serious competitor runs RF: you

Great topic. The core difference comes down to who owns the radio stack. With 2.4GHz proprietary RF, the manufacturer controls the entire protocol—custom polling schedules, dynamic frequency hopping that avoids congested channels, and a always-on polling loop through the dongle. That’s how you get 1000Hz native (1ms) and now 2000
