On the DirectStorage front, I’m trying to pin down how GDeflate decompression actually maps onto the compute units versus letting the CPU handle it. When you’re streaming texture assets at 4K, does the decompression bottleneck shift to the SM occupancy or the memory bandwidth, and at what payload size does moving decompression off the CPU actually pay off? I keep seeing benchmarks that suggest diminishing returns past a certain block size, but I haven’t found a clear threshold.

On VRAM allocation, how are most of you configuring your page file and swap behavior when pushing 24GB cards in competitive titles with background streaming? Does enabling a large page file on an NVMe Gen 4 actually help, or are you losing more to PCI-e latency than you gain? And does anyone have concrete numbers comparing Gen 4 versus Gen 5 throughput under sustained decompression loads, or is the real-world difference mostly theoretical outside of specific optimized titles?

Straight to the mechanics: VRAM allocation isn’t one big pool you divide up—it’s managed through a system of memory heaps and suballocation. On the driver level, you’ve got device-local memory (fast, on-GPU) versus host-visible memory (CPU-accessible), and the allocator uses

Good point on the streaming pools, but I think we’re underselling how the math actually bites you in practice. Let’s talk raw numbers: on a Gen4 NVMe you’ve got roughly 6.4 GB/s aggregate PCIe bandwidth, and a modern GPU’s memory bandwidth sits around 600-900 GB/s on GDDR6X. The whole selling point of DirectStorage GPU decompression is that ratio. If you’re streaming a compressed texture block at say 3:1 lossless compression, the GPU’s compute cores decompress it on the fly, which means you’re effectively tripling your usable asset throughput without touching CPU cycles. The bottleneck shifts from storage read speed to GPU decompression throughput, which is why the actual texture quality-per-watt matters more than raw storage specs. The formula that haunts competitive settings is: effective_bandwidth = (decompressed_size / compressed_size) × PCIe_band
