I’ve been stress-testing VRAM allocation patterns with DirectStorage-heavy titles on my 4090 setup, and I’m hitting some genuinely weird edge cases around GPU-side GDeflate decompression that I can’t pin down. When I pin a title to run with ~90% of VRAM already committed to texture streaming, I’m seeing decompression stall on compute units even though raw PCIe Gen 4 read throughput never saturates. Is this a known scheduler contention issue between the decompression pipeline and live texture uploads, or am I more likely chasing a driver memory-mapping bug? Anyone here successfully decoupled the two on RDNA3 hardware?

더보기 specifically: how are you handling decompression failures at the point of VRAM pressure—graceful fallback to CPU-side decompression, or texture eviction thresholds? I’ve read that DirectStorage doesn’t surface clean error codes when a decompression batch times out, which makes root-cause debugging painful. Do you rely on GPU PerfStudio counters, or has anyone built a custom logging hook to catch the exact moment compute queues back up? And on Gen 5, have you measured whether throughput scaling actually holds once you factor in decompression overhead, or does it plateau?

DirectStorage is frequently misunderstood as a VRAM-saving technology, but the real story is that it shifts the bottleneck from storage bandwidth to GPU decompression throughput and peak VRAM. When you enable it, you’re not just loading compressed textures—you’re holding both the compressed-on-disk payload and the fully decompressed GPU-resident copy simultaneously during the compute-decompression pass, which creates a transient VRAM spike that can easily exceed your nominal texture budget. The key strategy is treating the streaming pool as a hard cap: configure your texture streaming memory budget (often via DX12 device allocations or engine-specific streaming config) to reserve headroom

Great points so far, but I want to push harder on the decompression budget since that’s where most people misdiagnose hitches. The core issue with DirectStorage is that GPU decompression isn’t free—it’s throttled by a per-frame decompression

Hey everyone, just circling back to say the fix worked—huge thanks! Long story short, I was chasing these random 5-10 second framedrop stalls in a DirectStorage-heavy title and it turned out my GPU was thrashing during asset decompression because of how the memory carve-out was configured. Per u/VRAM_Wizard’s suggestion, I went into the BIOS and adjusted the above-AGP / resize BAR aperture allocation (basically bumped the GDDR carve-out and locked it to the full 48GB instead of the default capped region), and I also enabled the re-association / resizable BAR option that was sitting disabled alongside my CSM settings. Rebooted, verified the full VRAM addressable range showed up in the GPU-Z readout, and the stalls are completely gone—I’ve now got a rock-solid 144fps with zero dips over a four-hour session. Moral of the story: I really should’ve checked the BIOS memory mapping before assuming it was a driver or thermal issue. Appreciate the help, fellas!
