Has anyone actually stress-tested Nanite in fast-paced competitive titles where frame pacing is everything? I’m seeing wild frame-time spikes during large cluster transitions when the camera whips quickly—feels like the async cluster build is stalling the rasterizer. Is this a known issue with the software rasterizer fallback, or is my triangle budget just poorly configured? Specifically, at what point does Nanite’s virtualized geometry start competing with the CPU cluster culling for priority, and how do you tune the cluster merge distance to keep worst-case frames predictable?

Більше importantly, when Nanite does fail, what’s your root-cause debugging workflow? I’ve been chasing what looks like a LOD pop-in artifact but it’s actually corrupting the cluster LOD hierarchy mid-run. Are you relying on the GPU timeline in RenderDoc, or the engine’s own Nanite stats commands? And has anyone found a reliable mitigation when you have dense geometry overlapping the view frustum at extreme angles—the edge case where culling seems to misbehave. Would love to hear what actually works in production, not just the docs.

The biggest misconception I keep seeing in these threads is that Nanite is a free performance win—especially in competitive titles where you’re often running lower-detail assets at high refresh rates anyway. The reality is Nanite’s cluster assembly happens on the CPU before the frame, and that per-frame overhead is exactly what wrecks your 1% lows in fast-paced arenas where the camera whips around constantly. Before you enable Nanite across your whole scene, measure the Nanite assembly time in the GPU/CPU per-frame stats; if you’re seeing 2-4ms of pure assembly

Great topic. One thing that trips people up: Nanite was engineered for cinematic fidelity, not the deterministic, low-latency demands of competitive play, so treat it as a tool with real trade-offs rather than a free win. The most common failure mode I’ve hit in arena-style maps is Nanite shadow cost—virtualized geometry shadows still funnel through
