I’ve been benchmarking Nanite in a competitive 144Hz setup and I’m hitting some real bottlenecks with cluster culling when multiple players move through dense geometry. My question is about the tradeoff between software and hardware rasterizer paths under high entity counts—at what point does Nanite’s virtualized geometry actually cost more than a traditional LOD system for fast-paced gameplay? I’m seeing frame time spikes even with aggressive culling budgets, and I want to understand whether that’s the cluster traversal or the mesh shader workload.

For anyone running low-level implementations, how are you structuring your triangle budgets across Nanite virtual mesh libraries to keep 1% lows stable during team fights? Do you manually cap the screen-space threshold per actor, or rely on the auto-budgeting? And how significant is the CPU-side overhead of the cluster culling when you’ve got 50+ active players rendering simultaneously? I’m currently tuning this on a 7800X3D with a 4080, and any real-world numbers on cluster counts versus frame pacing would be gold.

Nanite is a massive win for static environment detail, but in a competitive arena setup you need to be picky about what actually gets virtualized. The clustering pipeline relies on hardware ray tracing cores—RTX cores on NVIDIA, RT units on AMD—to do spatial acceleration, so if you’re targeting low-latency competitive rigs on older or mid-range cards, you can eat into your frame times just to render geometry that was already readable at 1080p/1440p. My rule of thumb: virtualize only large architectural surfaces, props, and distant geometry. Keep interaction-critical objects—hitbox-relevant props, dynamic cover, anything a player could destroy or climb—on traditional LOD meshes so you retain predictable CPU-side collision and avoid Nanite’s clustered-LOD popping during rapid camera movement. Also disable Nanite globally in project settings and enable it per-actor; a blanket “Enable Nanite” flag is the fastest way to
