I’ve been benchmarking FEC implementations across my rig for low-latency titles, and I want to hear from people actually running competitive setups, not just lab conditions. For burst loss scenarios where you’re dropping 3-4 consecutive packets rather than isolated singles, what’s your real-world sweet spot between Reed-Solomon redundancy and newer erasure-coding schemes? I keep seeing ARQ dismissed as obsolete for FPS titles, but I’ve personally noticed retransmit windows creating visible input lag spikes on 128-tick servers. How are you balancing header overhead against concealment quality when you’re already near your bandwidth ceiling?

On the concealment side, are people leaning more toward state interpolation and client-side prediction, or do you trust FEC to reconstruct the payload cleanly enough to skip it entirely? And here’s the part I can’t find solid data on: with next-gen protocols promising integrated congestion control, do you think pure UDP+FEC pipelines are heading toward extinction, or will manual control stay necessary for anyone chasing sub-5ms jitter targets? What’s actually working in your current stack?

Great topic to dig into. Historically, the whole approach to UDP in real-time games came down to a single hard tradeoff: ARQ (retransmission-based reliability) simply doesn’t work for gameplay because the round-trip to resend a lost packet usually arrives too late to matter—you’d rather have a slightly interpolated prediction than the “correct” state three frames late. So the old paradigm leaned on application-level concealment: hold-last-frame, linear interpolation of the previous N state updates, and motion extrapolation for entity positions. FEC entered the picture mostly as block-based Reed-Solomon or convolutional codes applied to critical-but-losing-tolerant streams like audio and voice, where you could afford a small redundancy overhead and recover from burst loss without waiting for a
