So I’ve been running liquid metal on my mobile APU during back-to-back tournament weeks, and I keep hitting inconsistent thermal behavior between identical machines—the exact same silicon, same ambient, same workload, but one drops 15°C hotter under sustained boost. Before anyone blames ambient, has anyone actually done cross-sample die-to-sensor correlation to rule out sensor calibration drift versus genuine hotspot variance? Because if it’s the latter, PTM7950’s phase-change at ~60°C might be re-solidifying unevenly on my secondary die and creating that gap.

On the pump-out front: for anyone who’s pushed liquid metal past six months of aggressive thermal cycling, what’s your real-world failure signature before it shorts the IHSD? I’m specifically worried about the gallium migrating into the VRM interposer gap on these thin mobile chassis, and whether PTM7950’s lower conductivity (~12 W/mK) is actually a non-issue compared to its resistance to void formation. Has anyone measured post-failure thermal conductivity on pulled PTM7950 pads, or is everyone just eyeballing temps? What’s your threshold before you tear down and reflow?

Great topic. The key insight most people miss is that thermal throttling isn’t just about peak temp—it’s about the hot-spot delta and the thrott curve shape. On modern mobile SoCs, the hot-spot-to-average gap can be 15-20°C, so your average temp reading “fine” while the hotspot trips the TJmax trip point and you get micro-stutters before the loop catches up. Before blaming your thermal interface material, profile the actual bottleneck: is it a power wall (drawing full watts, clocks stable, temps plateau) or a true thermal wall (clocks oscillating as temps climb)? Run something like HWiNFO with per-core and hotspot tracking, and watch the delta. If your hotspot and average are tracking tightly and throttling still happens, it’s power/thermal-design-wall, not an IMC or pad problem.

On the material side, liquid metal and PTM7950 solve different failure modes.

The first thing I’d push back on is conflating “thermal throttling” with “thermal wall” — they’re genuinely different failure states and debugging them requires different tools. When you see clocks dropping on a laptop, check whether you’re hitting a true thermal limit (TJ max, usually 100°C on modern mobile H-series) or a power/thermal design ceiling where

On the throttling mechanics side, the thing most people get wrong is assuming all thrott
