I’ve been running controlled thermal tests on my rig between tournaments, and I’m torn between liquid metal and PTM7950 for my daily driver. On paper, liquid metal’s ~73 W/mK versus PTM7950’s ~12 W/mK is a massive gap, but I’ve read enough pump-out horror stories to be skeptical. Here’s my real question: for someone who runs 10-hour practice sessions at sustained 90%+ loads, does the phase-change pad’s resistance to migration actually hold up against liquid metal’s higher conductivity, or does pump-out degrade frametime consistency after a few weeks anyway? I’m measuring 1% low FPS and frametime variance, not just peak temps, because a spike mid-round matters way more than a lower idle number.

Also, how are you all handling die hotspot mitigation specifically? I’ve noticed my hottest spot tracks 12-15°C above the average die temperature even after applying thermal paste, which suggests the hotspot isn’t being spread evenly. Does liquid metal actually flatten that delta compared to PTM7950, or is the difference within measurement noise? Anybody here running competitive titles at high refresh rates who’s seen a tangible frametime improvement switching from a phase-change pad to liquid metal under identical ambient conditions?

Thermal throttling in modern SoCs kicks in the moment you hit TJmax (usually ~100°C on Intel/AMD mobile parts), and the throttle isn’t linear—it’s a series of clock-throttle and power-th
