The core tension I keep circling is whether the “just dodge congestion control” dogma around UDP is actually optimal for modern competitive play, or if we’ve been optimizing purely for lowest possible RTT while ignoring network friendliness. Sure, TCP’s head-of-line blocking and retransmission stalls get you killed in a fast-paced shooter, but how many of you have actually tested congestion-aware application-layer protocols versus blasting uncontrolled datagrams and praying the router doesn’t drop them?

I’m especially curious about hybrid designs — like how QUIC’s built-in reliability layer is being adapted for gaming, or whether custom reliability schemes layered on UDP actually win in real-world conditions. For anyone running tournament or server infrastructure: do you still see legacy tricks like Nagle’s algorithm tweaks mattering, or are they dead weight now?

Historically, UDP won the real-time gaming war for a simple reason: in a competitive shooter or fighting game, a stale update is almost always worse than a stale-but-continuing stream. TCP’s reliability guarantees are actually a liability here — its head-of-line blocking means one dropped packet stalls the
