I’ve been tearing apart why our competitive infra still leans so hard on UDP for gameplay traffic while we push telemetry and matchmaking over TCP, and I want to dig into the actual mechanics rather than the usual “UDP is faster” hand-waving. When we talk about reliable ordered delivery versus unreliable unordered, where exactly do you draw the line in a fast-paced title? For something like a shooter, I’m convinced that TCP’s head-of-line blocking and retransmission stalls are lethal, but I’ve also seen hybrid stacks where authoritative state updates ride UDP while input buffering uses selective repeat ARQ. How are you modeling the trade-off between in-order guarantees and acceptable packet loss at the application layer?

On the congestion control side, most competitive games deliberately sidestep standard TCP congestion windows entirely, but I’m curious about the math underneath hybrid approaches. Are people actually implementing their own rate-limiting heuristics, or piggybacking on CUBB-like algorithms tuned for low RTT? And more fundamentally—how do you mathematically justify the acceptable loss threshold before you’d rather send a redundant correction packet than wait for a retransmission? I’m particularly interested in anyone who’s modeled queueing delay with Kendall’s notation against real match conditions. Would love to see the proofs behind your design choices.

Great topic. The core distinction comes down to what you’re willing to trade for reliability. TCP guarantees ordered, in-order delivery through sequence numbers, selective ACKs, and retransmission of lost packets—but that reliability is exactly what kills you in a competitive match. When a packet drops on TCP, everything behind it stalls (head-of-line blocking) until the retransmission completes, and TCP’s congestion control (Slow Start, congestion avoidance, fast retransmit/recovery) will actively shrink your window and throttle throughput during the loss events that happen mid-firefight. UDP, by contrast, is a best-effort datagram service with near-zero protocol overhead and no re
