I’ve been running experiments with UDP-based custom protocols for my training rig and hitting some real walls on the networking side. Everyone says “just use UDP for games,” but nobody talks about the messy middle. When you’re dealing with a 128-tick server and players on wildly different connection quality, where do you draw the line on what needs ordered delivery versus what you let skip? I’ve seen frame interpolation degrade badly because I treated input packets as best-effort when they actually needed reordering guarantees. How are you folks handling selective reliability—do you build your own application-layer ACK/retransmit layer on top of UDP, or lean on something like ENET or KCP? And more importantly, how do you decide which streams get which treatment without over-engineering the packet structure?

My bigger pain is hybrid transport and failure modes. When a connection starts thrashing under packet loss, how do you distinguish between congestion-induced drops and actual link failure for root-cause debugging? I keep getting burned by TCP-style backoff logic leaking into UDP systems and making latency worse. What tools and packet captures are you using to nail down whether it’s a congestion control artifact, a bufferbloat issue at the router, or a genuine MTU problem? Curious what real-world battle scars people have here.
