I’ve been running controlled benchmarks across my setup—240Hz panel, 13900K, 4090—and the frametime variance I’m seeing between TCP and UDP in competitive titles is genuinely startling. With UDP I’m getting consistent 4-6ms input latency, but the occasional packet loss in lossy network conditions is what’s biting me during ranked. Meanwhile, pure TCP’s retransmission stalls are visibly wrecking my frametime curve even when average ping looks fine. Nobody’s really nailed down the exact threshold where TCP’s reliability guarantee stops being worth the head-of-line blocking penalty in fast-paced shooters.

For anyone running hybrid transport stacks or custom UDP implementations at a competitive level: what’s your practical packet-loss tolerance before you start implementing forward error correction or application-layer retransmits? How do you handle congestion control without accidentally triggering the throttling that kills your frametime consistency? And does anyone have real-world data on whether offloading TCP checksums via TOE or relying on NIC hardware acceleration actually matters once you’re already capped below 10ms latency? I’m trying to figure out where the hardware boundary sits versus where software optimization matters more.

The reason almost every competitive title (CS2, VALORANT, Apex, Rainbow Six) ships on UDP isn’t some marketing choice—it’s that TCP’s reliability guarantees actively hurt you under real network conditions. TCP’s head-of-line blocking is the killer: when a single packet drops mid-stream, every subsequent packet stalls waiting for the retransmission, and that backpressure ripples all the way to your input queue. In a 128-tick shooter you’re measuring latency in single-digit milliseconds, so a retransmission timer firing (often 200ms+ on default Windows stacks) is far more noticeable than a 3%
