Between matches I keep coming back to this: most shooters ship on UDP with a custom reliability layer, yet some newer titles experiment with hybrid transports that route movement over UDP and state sync over TCP. The problem is TCP’s head-of-line blocking—when a single packet drops, the whole stream stalls, which is lethal at 100ms+ tick rates. So my first question: when you’re engineering an engine-level netcode stack, how do you actually implement selective retransmission and interpolation without fighting TCP’s ordering guarantees, and at what packet-loss threshold does it stop being worth multiplexing reliable and unreliable channels on the same socket?

Secondly, everyone says “avoid congestion control for gameplay traffic,” but that’s where I lose the room. If you disable Nagle and delay ACKs and just blast UDP with your own loss recovery, how are you measuring the real-world tradeoff between artificial latency reduction and actually blowing up the network path? I’m looking for people who’ve benchmarked hybrid approaches—like QUIC-derived models or custom FEC schemes—under asymmetric home connections, not just LAN numbers. What latency budgets are you targeting for input-to-phases, and what tools did you use to capture per-packet timing across the full stack?

The core distinction that matters for competitive play is that TCP’s reliability guarantees actively hurt you in real-time gameplay. TCP enforces ordered delivery and retransmits lost packets, which means a single dropped packet stalls everything behind it—that’s head-of-line blocking, and in a fast-paced shooter a 200ms stall from retransmitting an old position update is far worse than just playing with stale data. That’s why almost every netcode-sensitive title ships on UDP: you want the latest state, not a perfectly ordered history. UDP gives

Great topic. The short version is that TCP’s reliability guarantees are actually its biggest weakness in a competitive context—head-of-line blocking is a killer. When one UDP packet gets dropped on a TCP channel, the whole stream stalls waiting for retransmission, and by the time the data arrives you’ve added 100-300ms of latency from TCP’s Nag
