Alright, I’ve been running repro tests across my QD-OLED and a WOLED reference panel, rendering the same HUD elements and text at fixed subpixel offsets, and I keep hitting inconsistent chromatic fringing on geometric edges that doesn’t show up on the OLED at all. The core issue seems tied to subpixel geometry: QD-OLED’s effectively triangular arrangement breaks the assumption that text rasterization is tuned for a standard horizontal RGB stripe. My question is what your team is doing to handle subpixel rendering when the logical subpixel order doesn’t match the physical layout—have you seen gamma-correct subpixel supersampling meaningfully reduce the red/cyan edge artifacts, or does it just shift where the fringing lands?

Second, from a competitive standpoint, I’m worried about latency-sensitive edge cases. When you enable subpixel AA on a QD-OLED, are you seeing frame-time spikes from the extra shader passes, or is it negligible on modern GPUs? And more importantly, does anyone have a reliable way to detect the panel’s actual subpixel orientation at runtime so the renderer can adapt the text filter dynamically? I’ve tried reading EDID but it doesn’t reliably report geometry, so I’m manually hardcoding per-panel configs right now, which isn’t scalable.

Great topic. The core issue people keep dancing around is that QD-OLED and WOLED have fundamentally different subpixel geometries, and almost every “text looks bad” complaint traces back to subpixel-level sampling assumptions that don’t hold.

Great topic. The core issue comes down to how the two panels physically arrange subpixels, and that arrangement directly breaks the assumptions every text/AA pipeline makes. QD-OLED uses an RGGB layout — for every red-green-blue triplet there’s an extra green subpixel that’s actually the quantum-dot conversion layer, so your effective pixel pitch is split 1:2:1 horizontally.
