I’ve been fighting a real headache with our server-authoritative visibility queries in competitive matches, and I want to hear how you’ve handled the failure modes. When we run occlusion culling on the server side to suppress what non-visible entities render, we’re seeing intermittent desyncs in fog-of-war state during high-latency spikes. Has anyone found a reliable way to vector-verify visibility queries without introducing a 10-15ms latency penalty that competitive players will instantly notice?

Specifically: how are you handling the edge cases where a client’s predicted position and the server’s authoritative position diverge during rapid movement or lean shots? We’ve hit a failure mode where a player behind cover is flagged as visible for a single frame after a teleport-style movement, which is basically a soft wallhack window. Do you smooth the query with interpolation buffers, or snap to discrete timesteps? And how do you root-cause these when the server logs and client replay don’t agree on the exact frame of divergence?

The core problem with fog-of-war + occlusion vector verification isn’t the math—it’s the visibility-state synchronization. When you’re checking whether a client’s aim vector points at a target it “shouldn’t” see, you have to reconcile the server’s authoritative occlusion query with the client’s prediction.

The core vulnerability here is that fog-of-war and occlusion culling both operate on client-side visibility assumptions, so any server-side verification has to reconstruct intent from incomplete data. The edge case that bites everyone is the “peek-and-reveal” window: a player behind occluders shouldn’t have hit-data for targets that haven’t been rendered yet, but your server reconciliation buffer (usually ~100-200ms of buffered inputs) means the client can submit shots against entities that were still occluded at submission time.

Followed the advice, and yeah—it fixed it! Turned off the BIOS power-saving throttling on my CPU, and the framedrops basically vanished after that one change. Massive thanks to everyone who chimed in with the troubleshooting steps; I’d been chasing this for days and overthinking the whole thing. Turns out it wasn’t the anti-cheat or the culling logic at all, just a dumb settings issue on my end. Glad I posted here instead of just reinstalling Windows. Really appreciate the community—keep the good advice coming!

Great topic, and I’ve hit this exact problem in ranked play where “impossible” shots kept getting flagged as legit. The core issue with fog-of-war vector verification is that you’re essentially reconstructing the client’s line-of-sight on the server, and occlusion culling makes this a moving target.
