Anyone else been digging into replay system architecture for competitive titles lately? I’ve been benchmarking save-state serialization approaches across a few fighting games and the determinism headaches are real. When you’re dealing with floating-point operations across different CPU architectures, how are you all handling reproducibility? I’ve seen some engines lean on fixed-point math to sidestep the NaN drift, but that feels like a performance tax I’m not sure is worth it on modern hardware. Has anyone actually measured the overhead of re-quantizing floats versus just accepting drift and using checksum validation to flag divergence?

On the snapshot side, I keep coming back to delta snapshotting with adaptive keyframe intervals instead of fixed-rate captures. The question is how you tune the keyframe frequency dynamically—do you anchor it to gameplay state changes (input buffer flushes, frame advantage thresholds) or just monitor memory delta thresholds to trigger full snapshots? And what legacy approaches have you fully deprecated? I’m still seeing tons of hardcoded fixed-timestep replays in older titles that just choke on variable frame rates. Where do you think the next-gen replay systems are heading—networked deterministic lockstep, or is server-authoritative reconstruction the future for tournament infrastructure?
